DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Habitat for Humanity employees showed up to work on Tuesday morning with a week filled with pickups, but that’s when they found out they will be running behind due to their catalytic converters stolen off of their truck.

“This is the third time this has happened, the third time in less than a year,” Executive Director Donna Clemmons said. Normally what we would do is we would take our pickup truck with a trailer behind it and do it that way but they did the pickup truck too, so we had both of our trucks out of commission for the week.”

Due to that inconvenience, the non-profit organization is missing out on revenue. This issue seems to be a trend in the Wiregrass as Spectracare in Abbeville had three stolen from them and a church in Ozark had one stolen.

“I think they are stealing them to go cash them in at a catalytic converter place that will buy them from them and its beginning to be real profitable for them,” Clemmons said.

Clemmons says these places should be able to tell if a catalytic converter is brand new or if it came from a junkyard and she would like the converter places to show a little bit of accountability.

“If you got to the point where the businesses ask for a driver’s license, ask for some kind of identification, ask them where they got it any kind of questions,” She said. “Instead of just taking it and giving them money and letting them go.”

She says the organization has taken top-notch security measures in efforts to prevent these incidents.

“We’ve got grants so we can have better security systems, we’ve got better cameras, lighting, we put the truck in different areas so we can park it in a well-lit area,” She said.

As of now, the organization is having to rent a UHaul truck to do their pickups which is costly for them. If you know anything about the recent theft, you are asked to call the store or the Dothan police department.
