Two young children have been left orphaned after their parents and uncle were killed when their car struck a vehicle driving on the wrong side of the road.

Yanna Kockova and her husband Marko Godla died along with her brother Tomas Kocko after the head-on collision in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire.

The couple, both believed to be aged 22, are thought to have left behind children Nela, two and Rachael, one, after the crash in the early hours of yesterday.

Police believe the driver who was heading the wrong way could have been under the influence of drink or drugs at the time of the collision shortly after midnight.

Tributes have been paid on Facebook to the victims. Milan Godla said: 'Feeling sad and heartbroken after hearing news from my family this morning.

'My cousin has been involved in car crash last night with his wife and her brother in Peterborough. You will be missed. Rest in peace.'

Michael Rios added: 'My two favourite cousins lost their lives in a serious car crash today… Fly high my angels. Gone but never forgotten. I love you.'

Cambridgeshire Police said the man drove on the wrong side of a slip road to Stanground from Fletton Parkway shortly after midnight.

He then collided with the oncoming car 'killing all three of its occupants', police allege. The suspect was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

He was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of drink or drugs, and of causing death by dangerous driving.

Pictures from the scene showed a severely crushed small silver car and a dark pickup-truck with a smashed bonnet and windscreen.

Cambridgeshire Police Federation chairman Liz Groom said it was 'such sad news'. She tweeted: 'Thoughts with the families of those who have died.

'Also with the officers and other emergency service colleagues who attended the incident and delivered the terrible messages to loved ones.

'One of the hardest and most difficult parts of our job that you never forget.'

A stretch of the westbound A road was closed and subsequently reopened. Anyone with information should contact Cambridgeshire Police on 101.
