ISLANDIA, NY — Two people were seriously injured in a two-car crash Tuesday morning in Islandia while the other driver, Andrew Barker, 46, who is homeless, ran away, Suffolk police said.

A 52-year-old West Babylon man was driving a 2006 Cadillac sedan northbound on Old Nichols Road when the car was hit by Barker, who was driving a 1993 Ford Econoline van westbound on Express Drive North at around 2:40 a.m., police said. The West Babylon man and a 40-year-old Central Islip woman — a passenger in the Cadillac — were brought to Stony Brook University Hospital in serious condition, police said.

Barker ran off southbound on Old Nichols Road before officers arrived to the crash, police said. He was arrested and charged with two counts of leaving the scene of an incident involving serious physical injury, police said on Tuesday afternoon.

The Ford van was not stolen, police said. Barker would sometimes stay in the van, though it was unregistered and did not belong to him, police said. Investigators tracked down the van's prior owners, which ultimately led them to Barker, police said.

Barker will be held overnight at the Fourth Precinct and is scheduled for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on Wednesday.
