Amazon’s newest original series Final Life is technically not “new.” As Variety reported two years ago, it first premiered on Prime Video in Japan in 2017. However, it is the first time that the Asian drama, starring Shota Matsuda and K-pop star Taemin, is available for US users to stream. The show itself was part of Amazon’s push into foreign streaming content, and Final Life did something a tad bit daring, pairing Japanese star Shoda Matsuda with SHINee alum Taemin.
Final Life follows two very different young men as they are thrown together on a special police force. Ryo Kawakubo (Shota Matsuda) grew up in destitution, while Song Shi-On (Taemin) has a posh American education. His one problem? Uh, a risky medical experiment on his brain has rendered him with amnesia. He also has blue hair, bright blue eyes, and enters the story by runway-walking off of a helicopter. You know, normal police guy stuff.
The show is also rather violent. About five minutes into Final Life, Ryo’s partner gets gunned down by a sniper and it’s rather bloody. Hyper-stylized, full of mystery, and featuring an aura of danger, Final Life isn’t a slight and easy Japanese drama that’s all about romance. Rather, it puts his heartthrob leads through hell.
Hey, at least Shota Matsuda and Taemin look good solving all those dangerous cases, right? (I mean, they do look really good. Final Life makes sure to focus on Matsuda and Taemin’s crazy good looks.
Final Life is now streaming on Prime Video in the United States.
