'Unspecified' Threat Forces St. Laurence To Cancel Classes

Burbank police dismiss social media threat as "unfounded" after St. Laurence High School cancels Tuesday classes as precautionary measure.

BURBANK, IL -- Burbank police have completed their investigation into an unspecified social media threat that forced St. Laurence High School into canceling classes on Tuesday, school officials said. After a full investigation, police have dismissed the rumor as unfounded. All regular after school activities, including sports practices, games and clubs, will resume as regularly scheduled at the discretion of coaches and moderators.

A statement posted on St. Laurence’s website said that Burbank police encouraged the school to cancel classes on Nov. 21, so they could investigate an unspecified threat that was circulating on social media to give police time to complete an investigation. “The decision was made proactively out of caution for students, faculty and staff, as their safety is always our top priority.”

Parents received an email late Monday evening from principal Jim Muting, informing them that classes would be canceled the next day after the received information from Burbank police of a potential threat to St. Laurence, Burbank Beat reports. The exact nature of the threat was not specified.

Burbank police said the threat to St. Laurence came via a third party on social media late Monday evening. Since the threat could not be immediately authenticated, the school thought it best to cancel classes on Tuesday, according to Lt. Mike Dudlo of the Burbank Police Department.
