STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Despite Staten Island Chuck calling for an early spring, the New York City area could see some significant snowfall in March, AccuWeather forecasters warned Wednesday.
“There are opportunities, and not just one but several that we could get some snow events," AccuWeather meteorologist Paul Pastelok said. “There is more winter weather still left to go here and that’s why March won’t have an early transition into spring.”
“These systems that we’re seeing are grabbing a lot of moisture out in the Gulf of Mexico and that can easily give you 8 to 10 inches of snow. ... I really think we have some concerns here down the road,” he said.
Last year, Staten Islanders witnessed significant snowfall on the first day of spring.
Added AccuWeather long-range meteorologist Max Vido: “We aren’t expecting an immediate flip to springlike weather on March 1."
“However, once we get to the later parts of March and the beginning of April, we’re expecting a faster transition to spring than last year," Vido added.
He said the region shouldn’t expect a particularly wet spring like 2018.
“This year, it could be a little drier and people who had outdoor projects delayed from the summer and fall might have an opportunity to get out there and work on them," Vido said.
