BIRMINGHAM, AL - The week of January 7-11 saw a significant amount of national attention given to some Birmingham-area headlines. Most notable, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute opted to rescind an award it had planned to give to civil rights activist Angela Davis. This news came in the same week that former Birmingham mayor Larry Langford passed away at age 72.

The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute was set to honor activist Angela Davis in February with its highest honor, the prestigious Fred Shuttlesworth Human Rights Award, at the institute's annual gala. However, that honor has now been rescinded.

Former Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford Dies At Age 72

Less than two weeks after being granted early release from federal prison in Kentucky, former Birmingham and Fairfield mayor Larry Langford has died. Langford was granted release because of his poor health, and died Tuesday at the age of 72.

Another 'Random Shooting' Reported In Metro Area

A car traveling near I-65 in the Homewood area Wednesday was hit by gunfire from a car that pulled up beside the victims on Lakeshore Boulevard. No one was injured in the incident, but one victim reported that her jacked was pierced by a bullet.

Former Bama QB Freddie Kitchens Named Browns Head Coach

Freddie Kitchens, the Crimson Tide quarterback from 1993-97, was named the new head coach for the Cleveland Browns. Kitchens was one of the most prolific passers of the Gene Stallings era at Alabama.

Two Police Incidents Occur At Thompson High School

Two separate incidents involving large police presence occurred during the week at Thompson High School. First, a major drug arrest was made, followed the next day by a threat of violence that caused a lockdown of the school.
