Rugby player Mitch Cronin dies in backyard pool during quarantine

An Australian rugby player died Friday after working out at his home in accordance with the country’s coronavirus lockdown, according to a report.

Mitch Cronin, a 27-year-old Queensland Cup player, trained with weights in his backyard in Brisbane before going to cool down in his pool, where he died of a suspected heart attack, according to The Independent.

Cronin was a captain for Wynnum Manly in one of the top regional rugby leagues in Australia, which is under strict lockdown rules to combat the coronavirus pandemic.

“This has left Wynnum club, their players and myself totally shocked,” Paul Hogan, Cronin’s manager, told NewsCorp. “He was an outstanding young man and my thoughts are with his family. We are all shattered.”

Cronin played in the opening round of the Queensland Cup season in March before it was shut down and ultimately canceled because of the pandemic.

“He was a quality human being who will be mourned by many and missed by all,” Queensland Rugby League competitions manager Dave Maiden said. “The people who came across him will be in a state of disbelief. He’s one of the good ones.”
