A single-family residence was deemed a total loss following an early Saturday morning fire just south of Mitchell.

At 4:42 a.m. the Mitchell Fire Department responded to a fire south of town, roughly a mile east of Highway 37 on 257th Street.

While no people sustained injury from the fire, three personal pets were lost in the fire.

The cause of the fire is believed to be from the remnants of a fire pit that wasn’t properly extinguished. No foul play is suspected as the cause of the fire.

“It started on outside the structure and worked its way inside to the home,” Mitchell Battalion Chief Ben Vanden Hoek said. “It was a very unfortunate and significant accident.”
