Former Trump official Robert Lighthizer endorses JD Vance: ‘He will stand up to China’

.

Former U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer announced his support for Ohio Republican senatorial candidate J.D. Vance on Wednesday.

Vance, who is a venture capitalist and the author of Hillbilly Elegy, previously criticized former President Donald Trump during the 2016 election but has since changed his stance to support the “America First” agenda. He has received a slew of positive media coverage on right-of-center outlets, including on Fox News’s Tucker Carlson Tonight.

“I’m proud to endorse JD Vance’s candidacy for U.S. Senate. JD will advocate for our working-class and work to rebuild our country’s industrial base by continuing President Trump’s America First foreign policy that renegotiated trade deals and held big corporations accountable,” the press release read. “He will stand up to China, which already has its claws in our tech industry and will fight for the forgotten communities of Ohio whose jobs were shipped overseas. He is the strong leader that Ohio needs in the U.S. Senate.”

Vance’s campaign responded to Lighthizer, saying he was “honored to have his support.”

“From during his time as a trade official in the Reagan Administration and over the last 30 years, Bob Lighthizer has been one of the most consistent voices for a pro-America, pro-middle class trade policy,” Vance’s statement read. “If our leaders had listened to Bob in the 1990s and 2000s, we would not have seen China steal millions of middle-class manufacturing jobs, and we would have far more self-sufficiency and prosperity.”

“President Trump gave Ambassador Lighthizer perhaps the most important job in American economic policy, and he did a great job for our president and country,” Vance continued. “I’m honored to have his support, and I’ll be thrilled to rely on his counsel when I get to the Senate.”

Vance continues to mount support from top conservatives, such as Rep. Jim Banks, an Indiana Republican and chairman of the Republican Study Committee, who said in August that Vance “isn’t afraid to stand up to the woke elites and will always put middle- and working-class Ohioans first.”
