R. Kelly pleads not guilty to latest sexual abuse charges

News of the video broke as Kelly was to perform at the opening ceremony of the 2002 Winter Olympics (pictured). He was indicted in Chicago on 21 counts of child pornography. Later that month, the singer was apprehended by the Miami Police Department on a Chicago arrest warrant before police searched his home in Davenport, Florida was conducted. During the search, police recovered photos of Kelly having sex with an apparently underage girl.

In 2002, R. Kelly and Jay Z collaborated and produced "The Best of Both Worlds" album, which was overshadowed by Kelly's alleged involvement in a sex scandal. Sun-Times reporter Jim DeRogatis, who had published a number stories of Kelly's alleged sexual misconduct, received a videotape from an anonymous source in 2001, purported to show Kelly having sex with an underage woman. The video was handed over to the Chicago Police Department. Kelly maintained his innocence.

R. Kelly wrote songs for a number of artists, including Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson and Gladys Knight. He also helped teenaged singer and rising star Aaliyah with her 1994 album, "Age Aint Nothing But a Number." Despite the 12 year age gap, R. Kelly and Aaliyah became romantically involved and the pair tied the knot before the teen's family obtained an annulment of the marriage. Aaliyah reportedly lied on the marriage certificate, claiming to be 18 when she was just 15.

On Jan. 22, 2003, Kelly was arrested on child pornography charges after investigators said they found photographs of a nude girl at his home in Florida. A statement issued by Kelly's representative, Allan Mayer, called the arrest "a classic case of piling on, in which a local jurisdiction tries to make headlines by attaching itself to a celebrity case."

After keeping a low profile for years, Kelly returned the headlines in July 2017, when he was accused of abusing women and holding them in a "cult," parents and former members of his inner circle claimed in a new report. The R&B singer, who has homes near Chicago and Atlanta, reportedly houses up to six women and controls what they eat and what they sexually, Buzzfeed reported. A lawyer for the singer denied the shocking report, telling TMZ, "Mr. Robert Kelly is both alarmed and disturbed by the recent revelations attributed to him. Mr. Kelly unequivocally denies such accusations and will work diligently and forcibly to pursue his accusers and clear his name."
