Why you can trust Sky News
Thank you and good evening

Thank you for joining our live coverage of the UK's heatwave, which contributed to a lot of wildfires throughout this weekend.

Tragically a number of people have lost their lives after getting into difficulty in lakes and rivers around the country.

While thunderstorms are expected to break the heat over the next week, they may not do much for the drought.

The ground is just too baked to let the water soak in, and surface runoff may instead lead to sudden flooding.

We'll be back again tomorrow.

Thunderstorms to bring more danger and not relief

The UK is braced for several days of thunderstorms after a hot weekend which saw parts of the country grapple with wildfires.

But the change in weather is likely to bring more danger rather than relief, meteorologists have warned.

Firefighting operations completed in Gillingham

Nine fire engines have put out a field fire at Lambsfrith Grove in Hempstead, Gillingham.

The blaze affected approximately four hectares of undergrowth and tree lines.

"Fire crews will revisit the area in the early hours on Monday to ensure it remains safe," the service stated.

"No casualties were reported, and the cause has not yet been confirmed."

Manchester City criticised over sun cream policy

Manchester City have been criticised for banning fans from bringing sun cream to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

However the club has apologised and described the ban as an "administrative error" by its supporter services team on Twitter.

Temperatures reached 31 degrees Celsius on the day, when the team ran out 4-0 winners against Bournemouth United.

Melanoma UK, one of the country's leading skin cancer patient organisations, criticised the message on social media, in which the supporter services team responded to a question to state that the cream was not permitted to be brought in to the Etihad Stadium.

"Really? You won't allow sunscreen into the stadium? What is the explanation?

"You must be aware of the increase in skin cancers and the danger of UVA and UVB? Not here to criticise, but this is very worrying. Happy to work with you in awareness. Many footballers have had melanom.

"Your supporter services team have got this wrong. You cannot expect a stadium full of fans (many of them children) not to have sunscreen with them.

"Help protect them - link up with someone who can provide the sunscreen inside the stadium. This is so disappointing."

The club subsequently clarified its position on Sunday, saying that "supporters were allowed to bring sun cream into the Etihad Stadium at Saturday's match."

The tweet was published in error, they added, and apologise to supporters for it.

"The health and safety of supporters is our priority and we will ensure that internal processes are reviewed following this matter."

London Fire Brigade says that a grass fire in fields surrounding a college in north London is now under control.

Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters were called to the scene near Turkey Street in Enfield.

The fire destroyed around five hectares of heathland, although no properties were affected.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Emergency services by the Thames at Hampton Court

A number of emergency service vehicles and an inflatable dinghy are at the scene now where a young man went missing in the water.

The man was swimming in the river Thames near Hampton Court bridge at the time he got into difficulty, according to eyewitnesses.

The man was in his mid-to-late teens, the eyewitnesses said.

Inflatable dinghies are now joining the search and a helicopter has been spotted overhead.
