Former state Rep. Doug Bennett dies in motorcycle crash

MUSKEGON, MI – Former state Rep. Doug Bennett died in a motorcycle crash.

Bennett, 75, died Friday, July 16, in a crash with a pickup truck on Beach Street near Indiana Avenue, Muskegon police said.

The crash was reported around 8:55 p.m. Police found Bennett lying motionless in the street. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Muskegon police released few details but said investigators are working to determine what factors contributed to the crash.

His family announced on social media that “it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of the very best husband, dad and papa, Doug Bennett.”

Bennett, a Democrat from Muskegon Township, had served as a local union leader, Muskegon County commissioner and a state representative in the 92nd District before he was term-limited after the 2010 session. He served three two-year terms.

State Rep. Terry Sabo, who serves the 92nd District, wrote on Facebook: “I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of my friend, mentor and past State Representative Doug Bennett. Doug was leader in our community and loved his profession and family. My condolences to his wife Helene and the entire Bennett family.”
