City Council Speaker Corey Johnson joined a growing chorus of politicians questioning the NYPD over its mishandling of Jeffrey Epstein’s sex-offender status — following a Post report showing cops ignored a judge’s order to make him check in with their sex-offender unit.
“So we have to make sure, if there was a screw up at the NYPD, we have to make sure it gets corrected,” Johnson said Thursday. “We don’t want Jeffrey Epstein being above the law or any sex offender that is dangerous to a community being above the law.”
A state judge in 2011 said that convicted pedophile Epstein should have been required to check in with the cops’ Sex Offender Monitoring Unit every 90 days — but cops ignored the instruction, claiming it wasn’t their responsibility because Epstein says his primary residence is in the US Virgin Islands.
Councilmen Joe Borelli and Donovan Richards wrote a scathing letter to the NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau demanding a probe.
“How did NYPD justify granting permission for Jeffrey Epstein to ignore a court mandated requirement based on an argument which was rejected by the highest judicial authority in the State of New York,” the pair wrote.
Mayor Bill de Blasio on Thursday called Epstein a “danger to society” and said he “should have had to report in all the time.”
