The fire prompted an evacuation of the surrounding area.

A 3-alarm fire swept through Organic Valley Creamery in McMinnville on Tuesday afternoon, prompting fire officials to evacuate the immediate surroundings.

The blaze broke out about 1:30 p.m. at the business, located at 700 Oregon 99W, just outside the city’s downtown core. Photos showed a dramatic scene with large flames and thick smoke pouring from the building.

Fire officials are worried about the potential release of anhydrous ammonia into the surrounding area, said Debbie McDermott, fire marshal for McMinnville. The chemical can cause irritation to eyes and lead to trouble breathing. It’s used as a refrigerant at the site, which processes milk and produces butter and powdered milk.

Authorities evacuated the area within a quarter-mile of the creamery and asked residents within a half-mile to be prepared to evacuate if winds pick up.

The creamery is several buildings, McDermott said. She said the cause remains under investigation.

Oregon 99W remains closed in both directions near the fire. Officials expect the road to remain closed for several hours.

“We are working to support all of our employees, the first responders, their families, and the community of McMinnville,” Bob Kirchoff, Organic Valley CEO, in a statement. “Everyone at our cooperative is ready to help. We are thankful that there are no reported injuries, and we are working to ensure the safety of our employees and the surrounding community.”
