US surpasses one million deaths to Covid-19

Americans are taking stock after the US Covid death toll reached a grim milestone.

The country's one million deaths is the highest official total in the world - although the World Health Organization believes the true death toll may be much higher elsewhere.

Covid-19 was the third leading cause of death in the United States in 2021, behind heart disease and cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The BBC spoke to Americans deeply affected by this milestone - both at home and in their workplace on the hospital front line.
