Fire crews were called to northeast Calgary Saturday morning to put out a massive blaze involving two detached garages.
Just before noon, the Calgary Fire Department was on scene in the 200 block of Skyview Springs Garden where radiant heat from the garages damaged five nearby homes and two additional garages.
Across the alley, two homes, one garage and a shed had minor siding damage.
The two original garages were completed destroyed along with three vehicles inside them, officials said.
Police ordered the five threatened homes to be evacuated, affecting 12 people and two pets for a brief period until they could go back inside.
The fire department said no injuries were reported and the cause is under investigation. Crews battled hotspots for the rest of the afternoon.
Isabelle Lane, 14, called 911 when she saw the fire engulfing a garage in her neighbourhood.
“The fire was spreading from this garage to the one next door,” she said. “We were really worried.”
Lane’s garage felt the heat too, resulting in minor damage.
“It was so hot, the fire – even our house started melting a little,” Lane said. “And we were just standing off to the side and we could feel it fully, how hot it was.”
