John Lewis to close all 50 stores temporarily as country responds to latest government measures

All 50 John Lewis stores across the country will close at end of business on Monday.

The decision has been made as the UK coronavirus death toll reaches more than 200.

The company added that none of its employees have been made redundant – some will work in-store at Waitrose, owned by John Lewis, whose 338 stores will all stay open.

In a statement online the company said: “Due to the unfolding situation with Coronavirus (COVID-19), we’re very sad to have to let you know we’ll be temporarily closing John Lewis shops from the end of the day on Monday 23 March.

“For 155 years, our mission has been to serve you – and rest assured, that will continue. Over the coming days we’ll be exploring ways to offer Partner-led services remotely, which could include nursery or wellbeing advice, and craft and cookery classes provided by Partners online, or on one to one calls. And, many of our shop Partners will be joining their colleagues at Waitrose, as we play our part to help feed the nation during this time.

“We may be closing our shop doors, but you can still shop with us online.

“Take care of yourselves, your loved ones and your community, and we look forward to welcoming you back into our shops when the time is right.”
