The Republican National Committee is withdrawing its support from Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore amid allegations he had improper sexual contact with teenage girls in the 1970s.
Politico reported RNC is pulling out of a joint fundraising agreement it had with Moore and canceling a program that would have paid for staffers working in the state for the GOP nominee. The RNC will no longer transfer any money to the race, according to the report, which cites senior party officials.
RNC Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel is expected to brief committee members on the decision today.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee has already ended its fundraising agreement with Moore.
Documents filed with the Federal Election committee previously showed RNC and NRSC, along with the Judge Roy Moore for U.S. Senate and Alabama Republican Party, as members of the Alabama 2017 Senate Victory Committee. The revised filing leaves only Moore's committee and Alabama GOP.
The Alabama Republican Party has not issued a statement on Moore or its support for its embattled candidate, but state GOP Chairwoman Terry Lathan said it would be a "serious error" for Republicans in the state to support Democratic challenger Doug Jones or a write-in candidate.
"It would be a serious error for any current elected GOP official or candidate to publicly endorse another party's candidate, an independent, a third party or a write in candidate in a general election as well," Lathan said. "I have heard of no GOP elected official or candidate that is even considering this option."
A growing number of Republicans, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan have expressed support for the accusers in the case and said Moore should end his Senate campaign.
