Why can’t Mets fans have nice things?

As the Mets are getting ready for a season that has all the makings of a World Series contender, they lose their superstar $100 million closer Edwin Diaz potentially for the entire 2023 season.

Diaz gets hurt in the WBC as teammates celebrated a win over the Dominican Republic that was just to get them into a quarterfinal.

Just a nightmare.

On top of that unfortunate news, days later, Brandon Nimmo hurt his knee and ankle sliding into second base in a spring training game.

It seems the Mets avoided the worst with their $100 million leadoff man, who has a chance to be ready for Opening Day.

Nonetheless, it’s a big season ahead for the Mets and it’s the start of Season 4 of the “Amazin’ But True” podcast with Nelson Figueroa and me. We will drop two episodes a week this season after every Mets series on Mondays and Thursdays. You can listen below or watch the show below on the New York Post Sports YouTube page.

Amazin’ But True Podcast with Jake Brown & Nelson Figueroa:

  • DIAZ DISASTER: What an unfortunate series of events. Edwin Diaz wasn’t even celebrating the Puerto Rico victory and teammates jumped on him and he tears his patellar tendon in his right knee. Maybe he returns for a miraculous postseason run. It’s not out of the realm for him to be back in October.
  • HOW DO METS REPLACE DIAZ: Can David Robertson be the full-time closer? Do they mix and match with Adam Ottavino? Should the Mets sign Zack Britton? They won’t find a true replacement, but will need to make something work. The middle relief takes a hit here. They have to go get another reliever.
  • WBC DEBATE: Should the WBC be moved till after the season? Figgie argues that guys are gassed by then and don’t want to be playing. I argue that if a guy gets hurt in November he can still play the following season. Figgie talks about his experience pitching for Puerto Rico and how important it was for his career to showcase himself in this tournament.
  • BRUISED BRANDON: Nimmo’s injury looked a lot worse when it happened than what it turned out to be. How will the Mets replace Nimmo if he misses time? Starling Marte in CF? Mark Canha in CF? Tommy Pham?
  • 2023 CITI FIELD METS PROMOTIONS: We go over some of the best Citi Field promotions this season. The Mets have gone down from 25,000 to 15,000 fans. I have a theory that they have 25,000 and they will save 10,000 of them to give out for other games. My favorites are the Mets jerseys for different sports (basketball, football, soccer).
  • LONG ISLAND DUCKS TRYOUT: Figgie will be the pitching coach for the Ducks this season alongside manager Wally Backman. They are holding open tryouts on April 15th. We will get video of me going through a tryout for the team. Maybe I’ll get a spot as a ball boy.
