VIRGINIA - Adam Comrie, a hockey defenseman who formerly played for the Saginaw Spirit, died in a motorcycle crash Friday while visiting his mother’s home in Virginia, according to a release from his current team.

The 30-year-old’s most recent professional stint came for the Klagenfurt Red Jackets of the Austrian Erste Bank Hockey League. The team announced his passing on Aug. 7, saying they lost “an open-hearted and humorous teammate who has put a smile on your face countless times.”

While in the OHL in Saginaw from 2007-2009, he scored 19 goals and tallied 58 points. His success led him to be drafted 80th overall in the third round of the 2008 NHL Draft by the Florida Panthers.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and teammates during this most difficult time,” said the Saginaw Spirit in a release.

“The Ontario Hockey League family is deeply saddened by the sudden and tragic loss of former Saginaw Spirit and Guelph Storm defenceman Adam Comrie who has passed away at the age of 30,” the league wrote in a release. “The Ontario Hockey League offers its deepest condolences to Adam’s friends and family at this most difficult time.”

Comrie was born July 31, 1990 in Kanata, Ontario and held dual American-Canadian citizenship, according to Klagenfurt. Several of his former professional teammates, including Mike McKenna of the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL, offered their condolences.

“Awful news of Adam Comrie’s passing,” the goalie wrote on Twitter. “We played together with @SyracuseCrunch and kept in touch ever since. Hockey never defined him despite being a very talented player. I admired that about Adam. 30 years young. Too soon.”
