Apple Watch Series 7: Infuriating Problem To Be Fixed In Days

This article is more than 2 years old.

If you’ve been finding your Apple Watch is failing to charge, you’re not alone. It’s a problem that was spotted back in December and it looks like the next watchOS update, due in the next few days, will mean it’s a thing of the past.

The next expected update is watchOS 8.4, which will supersede watchOS 8.3, the software which introduced the problem.

The release notes for the update specifically say that it addresses a bug that caused some chargers to be unable to charge the Watch.

Well, of course, sometimes software updates do more harm than good, and most chargers were working just fine with watchOS 8.3, but let’s see.

If you haven’t come across this problem, then the chances are that you won’t unless you change your charger. The bug has affected third-party chargers and not all of those: the ones I tested, from brands such as AirUnleashed and Nomad, had no problem charging the Watch after it had been updated to watchOS 8.3.

That’s not to diminish the problem, which was serious: for some users the Watch simply wouldn’t charge at all and for others it would all look like it was working just fine, only to stop completely after just a couple of minutes.

So, if your current charger is fine, it’ll continue to be fine. And if not? Well, charging by the Apple-supplied charging puck has proved effective in almost every case, thank goodness, though there were some isolated reports of Apple’s hardware not doing its job.

If things have been done right in the update, then this will cease to be a problem for anyone.

So, when can we expect this fix to arrive?

The software is still in beta and it reached Release Candidate status on Thursday, January 20. Which means the general release could land this week, perhaps as soon as Tuesday, January 25.
