Raw sewage released into Connecticut River in South Hadley estimated at ‘less than 200,000 gallons’

SOUTH HADLEY — Town officials estimated the amount of raw sewage released into the Connecticut River after a pipe’s recently installed, 24-inch valve burst Thursday at “less than 200,000 gallons.”

“There has been no additional releases of untreated effluent into the Connecticut River today,” a statement from the town said Friday.

The system has a 10 million gallon per day capacity, the statement said, and is operating in this seasonal cycle treating about 1.5 million gallons per day.

A statement the town issued Thursday said diverting raw sewage into the river was a “necessary protocol” and was “necessary to protect against public and private damage” that would include raw sewage backing up into homes and businesses. This statement said the discharge to the river occurred from 11 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on Aug. 22.

A full report on the matter is expected during South Hadley’s Sept. 3 Select Board meeting.
