TYSONS, VA — Tysons Corner Center is fully open as of Tuesday, May 19, according to mall owner Macerich. Northern Virginia has a mix of malls that opted to close or remain open with businesses under coronavirus-related restrictions.

The mall had remained open in a limited capacity in line with Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam's March 23 executive order. That order allowed non-essential brick-and-mortar retail to remain open with no more than 10 customers at a time. Businesses that could not meet this requirement were ordered to close. Restaurants remained open in the mall but are limited to takeout and delivery. Businesses deemed essential under the order are allowed to operate normally.

As Northern Virginia remains under the restrictions of the March 23 order, retail must continue the limit of 10 customers. Macerich says Tysons Corner Center and other U.S. properties fully reopening are following enhanced sanitation practices and social distancing measures.

"Local economies depend on us, and our retailers are eager and ready to open for business in a safe, carefully planned, well-executed manner," said Macerich CEO Thomas O'Hern in a statement.

Operating status may vary by store. Select stores and restaurants are listed as open.

Status of Other Malls

Neighboring Tysons Galleria has announced a curbside pickup option for select retailers and restaurants starting Tuesday, May 19. All payments will be taken by phone or online. The mall has a designated curbside pickup area, and customers can provide their location to a business upon arrival.

Simon Property Group's three Northern Virginia shopping malls closed on March 19. Leesburg Premium Outlets opened on May 21 with COVID-19 safety protocols. According to their websites, Fashion Centre at Pentagon City and Potomac Mills remain closed. According to Inside Nova, the status of executive orders on Northern Virginia would factor into Simon Property Group's decision to open Potomac Mills on May 29.

Springfield Town Center will reopen on May 29 and has a list of opening dates for individual businesses. Fair Oaks Mall will fully reopen on May 29 with safety guidelines. Dulles Town Center has remained open and provides a list of open stores and restaurants. Select businesses at Manassas Mall are open.

The future status of the malls will depend on when Northam allows Northern Virginia to move into phase one of reopening. Phase one will be delayed for Northern Virginia through May 28, unless Northam amends or rescinds it by another executive order.

Under phase one, non-essential retail could operate at up to 50 percent capacity and must follow other safety guidelines. Restaurants may only open outdoor dining spaces for up to 50 percent of capacity and follow other guidelines. Indoor restaurants must continue operating with takeout and delivery only.
