Lucas Rogers of Virginia went airborne in Panama with a big and clean frontside air reverse, captured by his filmer Christian Woodward, to collect first place in this year’s Planetary Punt surf video contest.

The Planetary Punt is the brainchild of Santa Cruz artist Tim Ward. It rewards the best aerial maneuvers caught on film during a 365-day span from June 2018 to June 2019. Contestants upload their maneuvers to their Instagram accounts and flag it for the contest by including two required tags in their caption at the time they create the post. The judging panel featured Santa Cruz legends and aerial pioneers Jason “Ratboy” Collins and Darryl “Flea” Virostko.

Rogers and Woodward took home $20,000 for the win. Reef Heazlewood of Australia received $3,000 for second, while Brad Flora of Ocean Beach, Maryland, took home $2,000 for third.

“It’s a funny subject because I know there will always be haters on a win like this,” Woodward said in a press release, “but they’re going to be even more flared up at the fact that the camera I used was so low-grade. And to think back to that trip to Panama where the other photogs were fully geared up, and there I was with a super low-budget setup just trying to catch a few shots.”
