A Hong Kong Diner Pop-Up Is Coming to the West Village

Plus, a Rockaways taco stand returns — and more intel

Wilson Tang is known for helping give new life to the Doyers Street Nom Wah Tea Parlor in Chinatown. After disbanding from that role, he has tacked his name to several new projects including an East Village bar called Romeo’s. His latest move is transforming restaurateur John McDonald’s Hancock St. restaurant in the West Village into a pop-up version of Hong Kong-style diners called cha chaan tengs. Starting May 12, on Sundays and Mondays through June, find “Cantonese roast duck sandwich, macaroni soup with fried Spam, Cantonese French toast,” per the New York Times, in a kitchen led by chefs Akiko Thurnauer and Doron Wong. Cha Cha Tang, joins several other New York cha chaan tengs, including Mabu Café, Kong Sihk Tong, and M. Star.

Tacoaway Beach is back for the season

Some food vendors of the Rockaways, including Tacoaway Beach, will open as soon as May 3, ahead of a larger rollout for seasonal vendors coming closer to Memorial Day weekend. Tacoaway Beach’s first day will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., according to an Instagram post.

Two Parisian hot spots will host dinner

Jessica Yang and Robert Compagnon are behind Folderol, an ice cream parlor and wine bar, that made headlines for having to hire a bouncer to enforce a social media-free environment, alongside their neighboring Michelin-starred Le Rigmarole restaurant. Compagnon is coming to New York for a one-night-only dinner, held at Claud, in the East Village, on May 8, per a spokesperson.

A floating lobster shack returns

Hudson of North River Lobster Company, a lobster shack at Pier 81 at West 41st Street and 12th Avenue, has been around for a decade. The restaurant is back with a new loyalty program, with priority for the neighborhood: People who live in neighboring zip codes — 10001, 10011, 10018, 10019, 10036 — all get free, unlimited entry onto the boat, and complimentary drinks for birthdays and half-birthdays.
