Main Street from Inkster Boulevard to Polson Avenue was closed for several hours Saturday afternoon following a crash involving a Winnipeg police cruiser.
According to police, a general patrol unit was travelling southbound on Main Street and was responding to a high-priority call when it was involved in a collision with a vehicle in the area of Polson Avenue. The cruiser, which had its emergency lighting and sirens activated, then struck a nearby building.
“They were responding to the report of a male that had a knife and was challenging one of our supervisors who was by himself,” Const. Jay Murray said.
A picture from the scene shows a cruiser inside a Bargains Galore shop. Police said no one inside the store was injured.
Two officers were transported to hospital in stable condition. An occupant of the other vehicle was taken to hospital in unstable condition for precautionary reasons.
“We don’t know if somebody’s at fault, or what happened here,” Murray said.
Murray said the incident hits close to home for many officers. He said when en route to a high-priority call, emotions are running high.
“We don’t know if somebody’s going to pull to the left and stop, or if somebody’s just going to slam on their brakes, or do what’s correct and that’s pull over to the right and come to a stop,” he said. “These are very stressful incidents.”
