'President Barack H. Obama Ave.'? 50,000 Plus Sign Petition to Rename Street Outside Trump Tower

A petition to rename a stretch of Fifth Avenue between 56th and 57th Street to "President Barack H. Obama" has now garnered over 50,000 signatures online. The suggested stretch also happens to be right outside the Trump Tower and the irony is not lost on anyone.

Started around October last year, the petition has recently gained traction with people from across the country signing to rename the block. The move could change Trump Tower's address to "725 Barack H. Obama Avenue, New York, NY 10022"

"I honestly started it as a joke," Elizabeth Rowin, the woman behind the petition told Newsweek. "I saw a comedian joke about how it would make Trump so mad if it was named after former President Obama and thought why not," she added.

Rowin said she wrote to the New York City Council and got responses from several members assuring they would pursue the case.

The 56-year-old petitioner said the city should honor the president responsible for taking out Osama Bin Laden, the mastermind behind the September 11 terror attacks that killed almost 3,000 people. Rowin and other supporters also want to honor the leader for being "scandal-free" and "bringing back the economy."

Others say it's justice. "I LOVE New York - hate what the faux president has done to the city. I believe the karma of this amazing city could be much improved by this action!," a petitioner commented on the MoveOn.org appeal.

"Too bad Malcom X Boulevard is already taken," another comment reads.

However, the petition fails to meet one important condition to request co-naming a street. The honoree in question should be deceased for at least two years prior to the petition.

Rowin wants an exception to be made in this case. "I am sure the conditions can be changed, there are two streets in LA named after former President Obama. These laws are arbitrary and can be worked around," she said.

The goal of the online petition is to gain 75,000 signatures. Rowin said she will write to the New York City Council and Mayor Bill De Blasio to see if any progress has been made on the matter.

Other locations named in honor of famous people in the city include Christopher "Notorious B.I.G." Wallace Way, Dianna Ross Playground and Wu-Tang Clan District.

Trump Tower, once an iconic residential and commercial complex has recently witnessed plummeting occupancy rates. It was also the headquarter for the presidential campaign. It is one of the 12 properties owned and managed by Trump's organization in New York City.
