Bicycle riders will soon have more mountain bike trails to ride on at two Douglas County parks – Kensington Rune Stone Park and Lake Brophy County Park.

Douglas County commissioners approved resolutions for grant applications to secure funds to construct the trails. Douglas County Park Superintendent Brad Bonk brought the resolutions forward at the Tuesday, Feb. 18, regular board meeting.

The grant applications were made to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources for the Federal Recreational Trail Program.

The application for Kensington Rune Stone Park is to construct four miles of all-weather single-track trail. Douglas County received an anonymous donation in the amount of $40,000 for the project and must provide a 17% cash match.

At Lake Brophy County Park, the application is to construct one mile of single-track trail, one skills course and one pump track. Douglas County received $50,000 in an anonymous donation and must provide a 33% cash match.

In order to receive the grants, the county will need to spend about $40,000, said Bonk. He noted that spending that amount will leverage about $230,000 in funding.

County Commissioner Charlie Meyer asked Bonk if there was enough money in the budget to provide the $40,000. Bonk told him there was.

The resolution assures the county will maintain the mountain bike trails at both parks for a period of no less than 20 years.

In other action

Douglas County commissioners approved the following other items:

  • Out-of-state travel for Assistant Veterans Service Officer Rhonda Fuchs to attend National Association of County Veterans Service Officers training in Georgia. The training will open up further accreditations for Fuchs, who will then be able to access more information once the training and her accreditation is complete. This will be beneficial to helping area veterans.

  • Advertising for bids for the 2020 paving projects, liquid calcium chloride application and pavement striping.

  • Filling seasonal positions for the parks department and maintenance department.

  • Maintenance agreement with G and R Controls for Douglas County Jail and Public Works.

  • A $750 Census Committee grant, which will pay for promotion activities.

  • The revised Douglas County Americans with Disabilities policy.
