Florida Breaks One-Day Record With 276 Reported New Deaths
Florida set a new single-day record Tuesday for the most deaths reported in any 24-hour period since the pandemic began.
TALLAHASSEE, FL — One day after Gov. Ron DeSantis touted the "sustained movements" of the state's coronavirus indicators, Florida set a new single-day record Tuesday for the most deaths reported in any 24-hour period since the pandemic began.
State health officials reported 276 new deaths in the state Tuesday as the death toll climbed to 8,553 from 8,277 a day earlier. The previous one-day record of 257 reported deaths was set July 31 following a string of records. State health officials reported another 132 deaths Tuesday involving non-Florida residents who died in Florida.
The total number of coronavirus cases in Florida climbed to 542,792 as of Tuesday, up from 536,961 cases a day earlier. That's an increase of 5,831 new cases.

Forty of Florida's 67 counties reported new deaths Tuesday. That compares with 91 new deaths Monday, 83 new deaths Sunday (state health officials reported 77), 182 new deaths Saturday, 180 new deaths Friday, 122 new deaths Thursday, 221 new deaths Wednesday (health officials reported 220) and 245 new deaths last Tuesday.

Florida reported a statewide positive test rate of 13.38 percent based on 4,055,587 tests as of Tuesday.
The state reported 31,354 total hospitalizations, up from 30,785 hospitalizations a day earlier. That represents an increase of 569 new hospitalizations over the previous day, which is among the highest one-day increases since the pandemic began.
In an effort to provide as much information to our readers as possible, Patch has been publishing a daily county-by-county breakdown of the coronavirus cases in Florida's 67 counties, along with the median age of patients, the number of hospital cases by county and the number of deaths.
Miami-Dade, which includes Miami and Miami Beach, reported 135,130 cases of the virus as of Tuesday. Nearby Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, reported 63,605 cases. Palm Beach County, which includes Palm Beach, West Palm and Boca Raton, reported 37,641 cases.
Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 32,996 cases. Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 32,042 cases.
