Holy Moe 1v1 hoops event was scary good

Former Staten Island high school basketball player Moses Dayee brought his Holy Moe Basketball Organization to New Dorp HS on June 1 to conduct what he dubbed the inaugural “Scary Island” 1v1 Showcase Basketball event.

Dayee, who goes by his Holy Moe rapper name, said the tournament was the first of its kind in the borough and featured former Island high school and collegiate players doing battle on the court.

“This is not the best 5v5 team with the most bench points that wins the game,” explained Dayee, the all-time leading boys’ scorer in New Dorp HS history. “This was me vs. you, just like (in the) park. It’s something Staten Island has never seen before.”

The event was deemed a success, but there were “some minor hiccups” which will be cleaned up in the future, according to Moe.

After graduating from New Dorp in 2008, Moe played basketball at Sullivan Community College in upstate New York for two years. He eventually transferred to Fort Hayes State in Kansas, joining what was the country's No. 1 ranked Division II college basketball program.

Moe has been conducting basketball events throughout the city for 10 years now and will soon be hosting his 10th annual Holy Moe Youth Basketball Tournament later this summer on Staten Island.

With his business partner, manager and best friend Will Fonseca, a former College of Staten Island hoop standout, the Holy Moe Organization is able to promote peace through basketball “as well as recreating an epic West 4th Street or Rucker Park-like atmosphere.”

In addition, the Holy Moe Organization helps raise funds to help students with college scholarships.
