Source: Woman who died at Todt Hill Houses had head injury; investigation ongoing

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Authorities are investigating a possibly-suspicious head injury suffered by a 26-year-old woman who was found unconscious at the Todt Hill Houses on Thursday, and a man has been questioned in connection with her death, according to a source with knowledge of the investigation.

An autopsy will determine the cause of death for Leayana Lewis, 26, who was pronounced dead on Thursday at Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton, according to police.

Doctors at the hospital discovered that Lewis had injuries to her skull that may have been caused by blunt-force trauma to the back of her head, the source told the Advance.

It was not clear how she sustained the injury.

A 30-year-old female roommate found Lewis lying facedown on a bed in a bedroom, according to police.

Authorities have questioned a man who said he was sleeping in the living room the morning of her death as part of the investigation, the source said.

No arrests have been made and the investigation continues, according to an NYPD spokesman.

Officers responded at about 8 a.m. on Thursday to a 911 call of an unconscious woman inside of the sixth-floor apartment at 773 Manor Road, according to a statement from the NYPD.

EMS was spotted doing CPR as they rushed Lewis into the ambulance.
