STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Riders of the Staten Island Ferry may have noticed a bright, new banner during their daily commutes.

“Focused on Infinity” is a 10-foot-tall, 60-foot-long vinyl art banner presented by the New York City Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Art Program, the National Lighthouse Museum and local artist Emily Noelle Lambert.

The stunning art installation was unveiled earlier this week at the St. George ferry terminal pedestrian passageway on Bay Street near Richmond Terrace.

“Focused on Infinity” is inspired by images of the Fresnel Lens, the compact lenses used in lighthouses to safely guide sailors ashore.

“I wish to draw an analogy between the navigation of an intuitive, creative landscape and the relationship between sailors and the ocean, portraying both journeys as leaps into the unknown, guided by distant light," said Lambert.

DOT Arts, now in its 10th year, commissioned “Focused on Infinity” as part of its signature Community Commissions program.

In honor of the program’s 10-year anniversary, DOT Art commissioned temporary art installations at “signature sites” that have housed multiple public art installations throughout the past decade.

The St. George ferry terminal has been home to at least six public art commissions, including two located along the pedestrian pathway.
