SAGINAW, MI — It’s illegal to dispose of used tires in landfills in Michigan, which means some get dumped in ditches, fields, woods and backyards where they collect water and create a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
So Saginaw County Mosquito Abatement Commission is hosting a residential tire drive Monday through Friday, July 15-19, to stop the problem where it starts.
The five-day drive is scheduled to take place from 1 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on the following days at the following locations:
- July 15 at Richland Township Hall, 1180 N. Hemlock Road.
- July 16 at James Township Hall, 6060 Swan Creek Road.
- July 17 at Brady Township Hall, 16020 Peet Road.
- July 18 at Pat’s Food Center, 7620 Midland Road in Freeland.
- July 19 at Thomas Township Police Department, 8215 Shields Drive.
This service is for Saginaw County residents with valid Michigan ID or driver’s license. Other requirements and limitations of the commission’s tire drives are as follows:
- No more than 10 tires per property, per year will be accepted.
- No tires on rims.
- Tires from businesses or other revenue generating enterprises will are not accepted.
- Car, truck, motorcycle, bike, and small household tires only, no semi, tractor or heavy equipment tires.
Saginaw County residents may also drop off tires at Saginaw County Mosquito Abatement Commission, 211 Congress.
This effort is funded in part through the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy Scrap Tire Cleanup Program, according to the mosquito control website.
