FORT WORTH, TX — Pier 1 Imports, which has 10 stores in Alabama, announced it is closing up to 450 locations nationwide, accounting for approximately half its stores. The Texas-based retail chain announced Monday the stores would be closed to "better align its business with the current operating environment."

The company plans to close certain distribution centers and lower its corporate spending, as well as lay off workers at the corporate level. The company has not revealed which stores are closing.

Robert Riesbeck, Pier 1’s Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer, said in a statement, “Although decisions that impact our associates are never easy, reducing the number of our brick-and-mortar locations is a necessary business decision. We thank our team of hard-working associates for their commitment to Pier 1 and to serving our customers.”
