Fraggle Rock is getting the reboot treatment. Apple TV+ announced today that they’ll be remaking the Jim Henson puppet show as a new global Apple Original series for kids and families, starring the same beloved characters.

The upcoming Apple TV+ series comes 33 years after the original, and will be produced by Lisa Henson (Jim Henson’s daughter) and Halle Stanford for The Jim Henson Company. While the reboot will feature new songs and different adventures for the Fraggles, Gobo, Red, Boober, Mokey, Wembley, and Uncle Travelling Matt will all be returning.

As part of Apple TV+’s deal with the Jim Henson Company, the streaming service also acquired the rights to every episode of the original Fraggle Rock series, Vulture reports. Fraggle Rock first ran from 1983-87 on HBO and aired a total of 96 episodes over the years.

Starting today, Apple TV+ made all of the episodes available to stream on their platform, marking the first time they’ve offered previously produced content to subscribers. A source told Vulture that Apple wanted the Fraggle Rock streaming rights for consistency — because of their upcoming reboot and the Fraggle Rock: Rock On! series, they would have all of the new Fraggle Rock content, while HBO would have had the original Fraggle Rock if Apple hadn’t acquired the library. This way, users will now turn to Apple TV+ for all of their Fraggle Rock needs.

When the Jim Henson Company first pitched the idea of adding the original series to Apple TV+, Apple was not interested, the Vulture source said. But Apple ultimately realized they would be competing with another streaming platform if they had the new Fraggle content, but the classic series was housed elsewhere, so they agreed to stream Fraggle Rock as part of the package.

The Fraggle Rock news comes shortly after Apple TV+ debuted Fraggle Rock: Rock On!, a celebrity-filled special featuring Alanis Morissette, Common, Jason Mraz, Neil Patrick Harris, Tiffany Haddish and Ziggy Marley. The series of mini episodes highlights connection during the coronavirus pandemic, and was shot entirely on iPhone 11s.
