Event planned to celebrate new runway, 90th anniversary of Jackson County Airport

BLACKMAN TWP., MI - When the Jackson County Airport opened in 1928, 10,000 people came to watch 40 biplanes put on an exhibition.

In celebration of the 90th anniversary of that event -- and its new runway -- the airport is hosting an event at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 27.

While there won't be 40 planes this time around, the free event will feature T-6 airplanes and a B-17 on display. For $500 per person, individuals can take a 25-minute ride in the World War II B-17 during the event.

The Boeing B-17G "Yankee Lady" is from the Yankee Air Museum in Van Buren Township and commonly called a "Flying Fortress." It will cruise at 150 mph at 1,200 feet.

The event also includes a picnic lunch, a short program and music. Incoming Airport Manager Juan Zapata will also be introduced, as 16-year manager Kent Maurer retires May 1.

After 17 years of efforts, the airport's Runway 7/25 opened Sept. 15, 2017. The majority of the $50 million for the project came via Federal Aviation Administration grants.
