SAN DIEGO — Police shot a man suspected of threatening officers and his parents with a weapon in the San Carlos area Wednesday, authorities said.

SkyFOX was over the scene around 4:30 p.m. as officers surrounded the 6500 block of Bonnie View Drive, which is located near Myron Green Elementary School and Patrick Henry High School, according to the San Diego Police Department.

Rich Freedman, of the SDPD, said during a press conference Wednesday that police received a radio call of a man in a house acting suicidal and threatening his parents with a loaded firearm.

When officers responded to the location, Freedman said they discussed a plan to safely bring the man into custody, which included a canine unit.

“As they (officers) approached the house, the male was inside an open garage. He had a firearm in his hand. He presented that firearm at the officers, prompting one officer to fire his weapon at least one time, striking the male,” Freedman said.

Police said the 60-year-old man, a resident of the home, did not retaliate and went down inside the garage from the gunshot as officers moved in to provide first aid until medics transported him to a local hospital. He is listed in critical condition.

Freedman confirmed the recovery of the man’s firearm inside the garage.

SDPD homicide unit is investigating the incident, with the U.S. Attorney’s Office and FBI also monitoring the investigation.
