ESPN Forgets White Sox Won World Series Again

An ESPN SportsCenter graphic that shows what's happened in sports since 1999 conveniently left out the 2005 Chicago White Sox.

CHICAGO, IL - ESPN nearly made it three days into 2018 before forgetting that the Chicago White Sox won the World Series in 2005. Now repeat offenders, the national sports television leader's SportsCenter program on Wednesday shared a graphic on Twitter - one that was not deleted as of three hours after it was posted - showing some of the things that have happened in sports since the Buffalo Bills last made the NFL Playoffs in 1999.

The graphic showed Michael Phelps having won 28 gold medals, LeBron James joining, leaving and returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers and Tiger Woods winning 12 of his 14 golf majors.

It also pointed out that both the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox ended long World Series championship droughts.

They did not mention the Chicago White Sox ending their 88-year drought in 2005, even though it was longer than the 86 years Red Sox fans had to wait until they won in 2004.

The snub is not the first for ESPN, who seemingly needs to be reminded at least once a year that the White Sox not only won the 2005 World Series but did it in dominating fashion. A sweep of the defending champions, four consecutive complete games by the starting pitchers and a World Series sweep on top of a 99-win regular season makes up one of the best seasons in baseball history.

When the Cubs were in their 2016 World Series match-up with the Cleveland Indians, ESPN showed a graphic on television that showed Chicago had won 10 sports championships since 1964 while Cleveland only won one. Problem was that Chicago had actually won 11, and that the 2005 White Sox championship was not shown on the graphic like the six Bulls, three Blackhawks and one Bears titles were.

The next fall, the "worldwide leader" was at it again. A Twitter graphic that showed the Houston Astros attempting to become only the second team (after the 1998 New York Yankees) in the modern era to win the World Series with less than two postseason losses was wrong. It neglected to note that the Astros would have become the third team to do that. Both the 1998 Yankees and 2005 White Sox won the championship with only one playoff loss.

ESPN apologized for the first two errors and may come up with an excuse or apologize for this one too. But having occurred on a less-than-annual basis now, it's becoming apparent that this is not an isolated incident.
