Just call him Floyd “Pocket Money” Mayweather.
The undefeated fighter — dubbed “Money” Mayweather during his career, not least because he earned $785 million across 50 fights — is now bafflingly shilling personalized birthday greetings on web site Cameo for $999 a pop. And while that may sound like a lot for a quick video message, consider that the champ was paid $68,181 per second for an exhibition match against Tenshin Nasukawa in 2018. (He dropped Nasukawa in two minutes and 12 seconds and went home without a scratch on him to cash the $9 million.)
His profile on the site touts Mayweather as “one of most iconic athletes of all time” and promises that he’ll respond to requests within five days. Oddly, in a video announcing his arrival on the site, Mayweather claimed to be the “most expensive celebrity on Cameo” — though Caitlyn Jenner appears to have that honor, charging more than twice Mayweather’s fee.
It appears that he’s taped at least one message already, since there’s a lone review from an apparently satisfied customer who gave Mayweather’s performance five stars.
Trying to make sense of Mayweather’s finances is as dizzying as taking his uppercut. On one hand, Page Six has run endless stories about him handing out “bricks of cash” at strip clubs and liberally tipping. On the other, several people have claimed he’s “broke” including longtime frenemy 50 Cent and UFC’s Chael Sonnen, who claimed that Mayweather came out of retirement to fight Conor McGregor because he was cash-strapped. Mayweather has denied being broke. Sonnen said: “It does not matter what you made, it matters what you kept, and he is a dumb-dumb.”
