Dirty Facilities, Improper Food Temps: December Health Scores

The Jefferson County Department of Health inspected 152 restaurants in December. See which ones didn't make the grade.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL β€” The Jefferson County Department of Health inspected 152 restaurants in the county in December and only three of those eateries received a score of 85 or worse.

The main complaint among the restaurants that scored poorly was improper food temperature β€” storing cold food above proper temperature, hot food below proper temperature β€” along with dirty facilities.

Here are the eateries in Jefferson County that scored an 85 or below this month on their health inspections:

Wings R Kings; 5429 Beacon Drive, Irondale (71): Points were deducted because a container of raw shrimp in the RI freezer appeared to be temperature abused (thawed and re-frozen); failure to maintain food at proper temperature; packages of lunch meat, hot dogs and potato salad stored in the make table cooler were not date marked; containers in the RI freezer and RI cooler were uncovered; raw chicken was stored above raw beef in the RI cooler; no chlorine test strips in sanitizing solution; exterior of steam table is soiled with debris; interior of RI cooler is soiled with liquids; dishes and cutlery stacked wet on shelves; men's restroom is missing paper towels as well as the handsink across from the mop sink; grease on the floors behind the grill and fryer; ceiling tiles need cleaning; hood filters over the fryer are soiled with grease.

Subway; 2516 19th Street North, Hueytown (74): Points were deducted because an employee left the store and returned to handle food without washing his hands; no food safety training for all food handlers as required; the refrigeration ceiling vent was leaking a liquid onto the onions, & bell peppers; food was not stored at proper temperature; soiled hot wrap containers stored with clean hot wrap containers; front 2 door RI refrigerator was missing a door handle; WI cooler was leaking a waste liquid from the refrigeration ceiling vent; floors were soiled, WI cooler floors had liquid residue.

Groovy Grub Cafe; 407 Main Street North, Warrior (85): Points were deducted because employees were not wearing hair restraints; squeeze bottles and a container of sugar were not labeled; can opener was soiled; three compartment sink is not sealed to the wall; wiping cloth was stored on a counter top; cases of take out plates were on the floor; hand sink was not usable, the hot water spigot was broken off; unusable large pieces of equipment stored in the back of the kitchen.
