SAUGUS, MA – A plan to transform a Route 1 dining hotspot into a drive-in theater got the go-ahead from local officials this week. The Saugus Board of Selectmen unanimously granted Kowloon Restaurant temporary outdoor seating for 50 vehicles and 20 tables in its parking lot to show drive-in movies and offer carhop service, Wicked Local reported.

Owner Bobby Wong says he wants to start the service June 9, when outdoor dining service is expected to begin as part of Phase 2 of reopening. A 30-by-20-foot projection screen is being built outside the restaurant, and viewers will be able to listen to the movie on the radio in their cars or on outdoor speakers, Wicked Local reported.

Customers will be able to get food and drinks delivered to their cars, and Wong received approval for a five-piece band to play easy listening music while people go up to order. The restaurant will screen movies between four and seven nights a week.
