Auto heir’s NYC lair finds buyer after $7M price chop

Jean “Johnny” Pigozzi, the wealthy Simca automobile heir, is in contract to sell his triplex penthouse at Manhattan’s Hotel des Artistes.

The Upper West Side spread first went on the market for $19 million in 2017, StreetEasy shows, and was last asking $11.9 million. The final sale price is not yet available.

The Hotel des Artistes, at 1 W. 67th St., has been home to artists like Norman Rockwell, playwright Noel Coward, and dancer Isadora Duncan.

Pigozzi’s 7,652-square-foot penthouse features a 55-foot great room with ceilings that are more than 18 feet high. It was designed by the late Italian architect Ettore Sottsass.

The master suite is on the top floor, which also boasts an 827-square-foot terrace with a large solarium and views of Central Park. Building amenities include a doorman, a pool, a gym, a squash court, a roof garden — and the Leopard at Des Artistes restaurant.

Pigozzi and his jet-setting lifestyle have been profiled in Vanity Fair, which dubbed him king of the celebrity selfie — for four decades. It’s no surprise, then, that he calls Andy Warhol one of his mentors. Pigozzi, also a photographer, an art collector and an investor, is also known for his eclectic art collection, which features 10,000 pieces of African art.
