DETROIT -- Matthew Stafford’s injury appears to be more serious than initially believed.
The Detroit Lions quarterback was thought to have a process fracture in his back, much like last season. That’s just a pain tolerance thing, and usually lasts only a couple weeks. Stafford was able to play through such an injury last season.
ESPN is reporting it was told last week the Lions believed Stafford could “miss one week, he could miss three weeks.” But now ESPN is saying Stafford has a six-week injury, although that doesn’t mean he’ll miss all six games either. And if you’re confused by what exactly that means, well, welcome to Detroit Lions football.
The Lions sent some mixed messages about why Stafford was allowed to practice after suffering the injury in Oakland, and how he was ultimately ruled out for the following week’s game in Chicago. The team said the injury wasn’t caught until Stafford underwent a scan late int he week. Doctors deemed it “unsafe” for him to play, and he was a late scratch.
Stafford didn’t practice all this week either, and now it seems he might be out a few more.
Jeff Driskel earned the first-team reps in practice and will get a second straight start on Sunday against Dallas.
