Christmas is bringing snow — that's wet and going to freeze.

Depending on where you live in the area, you’ve either gotten Christmas morning snow or rain. West of the coastline, the snow has been heavy and in some places quite wet. Snow will continue to come down at various intensities this morning, with a burst of very heavy snow before noon, possibly throughout the area.

As the winds kick up this afternoon, there will be a risk of scattered power outages.

Low pressure will move off the coastline and head up into the Gulf of Maine. As the pressure becomes more intense, it will create a strong pressure gradient — that’s the reason for the high wind. Some places inland could see winds gusting over 50 miles an hour. Along the coast, they could gust as high as 60.

Precipitation continues to push east through New England Christmas morning.

If you have slush on the ground, you’ll want to clear it as soon as the snow ends late this morning because temperatures are going to dramatically fall through the afternoon and overnight. By morning, they’ll be in the teens, freezing all the wet snow rock-solid.

This is a quick heading storm that will be done by noon. The winds, however, will continue throughout the rest of the day and into the overnight hours. Tuesday will feature strong winds, too, but they won’t be as intense as the ones we’ll see this afternoon.

It will be very cold the rest of the week. Not only might temperatures not get out of the lower teens on Thursday; there’s a chance it could be one of the coldest days of the entire winter. It will undoubtedly be one of the top five coldest.

Then we’ll face another chance of snow sometime on Saturday, though it’s too early to know details. One or two more blasts of arctic air will likely come in the first week of the New Year, as well. First Night could be very cold.

This is certainly starting out as a typical New England winter.
