One person is dead and two others were taken to hospital after a three-vehicle crash on Highway 22 west of Priddis on Monday, according to Alberta EMS.
According to Turner Valley RCMP, a dump truck towing a trailer was travelling east to Priddis from Bragg Creek when it collided with a small car. Investigators believe the car then collided with a maintenance vehicle.
On Monday night, the RCMP said the driver of the car was a 25-year-old man from Calgary. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The drivers of the dump truck and maintenance truck, both in their 50s, were taken to hospital as a precaution, RCMP said. Both are expected to be OK.
The head-on crash between the car and dump truck cracked the engine block of the dump truck, hitting the fuel tank and causing a fire. The driver was able to get out of the truck before it was engulfed in flames.
The RCMP said the cause of the crash was still under investigation and that “all possible contributing factors related to this collision are being considered.”
Alberta 511 tweeted at 1:45 p.m. that a stretch of the highway — about six kilometres west of the Highway 22X junction — was closed and a local detour was in place.
Shortly after 9 p.m., police said traffic was no longer being rerouted.
Priddis is about 40 minutes southwest of Calgary.
