Northwoods League: Huskies edged by Rox

Duluth returns home to host St. Cloud at 6:35 p.m. at Wade Stadium

When the Duluth Huskies return home Monday to begin a three-game Northwoods League home stand, they'll be looking to salvage a split with the St. Cloud Rox after falling 6-5 on Sunday in St. Cloud.

A two-out, two-RBI triple in the bottom of the seventh by Rox third baseman Jordan Barth was the difference Sunday, putting the Rox ahead 6-3. Barth finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs.

The Huskies (8-13), who play the Rox (10-10) at 6:35 p.m. Monday at Wade Stadium, got two runs back in the top of the eighth. They put runners on second and third in the ninth with two outs, but Aaron Greenfield was thrown out to end the game trying to steal home.

Huskies starting pitcher Austin Smith struck out 10 Rox batters in five-plus innings of work, giving up three earned runs off three hits with two walks.

Sunday's loss was the Huskies eighth in nine games with the one win coming Saturday, 5-4, in the first half of a doubleheader at the Eau Claire Express. After taking a 6-5 lead in the top of the eighth, Eau Claire scored two in the bottom half for the win. Matt Bottcher drove in four runs for the Express in the Game 2 win.
