Flashback Staten Island: E.J. Korvette opens in 1964 in New Springville

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- So, did Korvette’s have more of what you were looking for?

E.J. Korvette opened in 1964 in New Springville, on the site of a former chicken farm. Most of my friends were teenagers in that day and age, and we all bought many of our LPs (long-playing albums) in the extensive record department at the new E.J. Korvette store.

It was a large department store, and everyone loved it for one reason or another. Some remember getting lost as children there. Many took on jobs there. There was also a second E.J. Korvette location in Oakwood.

View the short video above, and you’ll be entertained by vintage images of the parking lot, advertisements and people dressed in the fashions of the day.

If you have any visuals to share, please send them to my email at jsomma@siadvance.com. Vintage photos and video clips are welcome! Also, please let me know if there are any places you’d like to see highlighted in an upcoming installment of “Flashback Staten Island."
