CURLING: US men hold firm to 2nd-place tie at World Juniors

LIVERPOOL, Nova Scotia -- The U.S. men retained second-place status at the 2019 World Junior Curling Championships on Wednesday.

Andrew Stopera and his team of Luc Violette (Edmonds, Wash.), Ben Richardson (Cleveland, Ohio), Graem Fenson (Bemidji) and Riley Fenson (Bemidji) beat Sweden 7-5 by scoring two in the ninth end. They then topped New Zealand 8-3 to improve to 5-2 in round-robin play.

Team USA remains tied with Canada, Norway and Switzerland for second in the standings. Scotland’s 7-0 mark leads the field.

On the women’s side, U.S. skip Cait Flannery and teammates Leah Yavarow (Bemidji), Lexi Lanigan (Duluth) and Rebecca Miles (Duluth) fell in their lone match of the day in a 9-8 loss to China, who scored one in the 10th end.

The U.S. women sit tied for seventh in the standings after six games at 2-4. China and Switzerland share the top spot with 5-1 records.

The American men will face Switzerland in their lone match today, while the women match up with Sweden and Switzerland.
