Fellow golfers are showing their collective support for Tiger Woods, who was involved in a serious rollover car accident last week in which he sustained compound fractures in his leg.
During the final round of WGC-Workday Championship Sunday, several players showed up sporting red shirts and black pants in honor of Woods, whose signature Sunday outfit features those colors. The 45-year-old Woods is still hospitalized in California.
Tony Finau wore a red mock golf shirt, black pants and his Nike hat backward – the way Woods has often arrived at tournaments. Woods’ mother, Tida, had suggested the attire when he was a young pro and he ended up making a tradition of it throughout his career.
At the Puerto Rico Championship, the opposite field event this week, the entire grounds crew wore the same red and black getup for Woods.
Other golfers who arrived in red were Rory McIlroy, Patrick Reed, Jason Day, Cameron Champ, Tommy Fleetwood and Sebastian Munoz. Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas both wore a shade of red that appeared to be closer to pink.
Bryson DeChambeau, Matt Kuchar and Day also used a Bridgestone golf ball with Tiger’s name stamped on the side.
Max Homa, who was awarded a trophy from Woods after winning the Genesis Invitational last Sunday, wrote on social media that he would honor Woods by trying his best. He didn’t have a red shirt, but said it was because of his various sponsorships that he was unable to wear one anyway.
Golf fans on Twitter didn’t take too kindly to that.
“I am contractually obligated to wear clothes with certain logos that I can’t buy at a Dick’s/Pro shop/Roger Dunn/Walmart/”a store”/etc. Thank u for all the options tho!” he wrote.
Homa later added: “I mean this with zero hyperbole, this is the weirdest thing I’ve ever experienced on Twitter lol. I love Tiger more than u guys. Promise. Listen to an interview from last week. Red and black tomorrow doesn’t prove that. A lifelong attempt to mimic his approach to the game does.”
